Terrarium for bearded dragon (Pogona vitticeps)
Terrarium was designed for one, adult bearded dragon (Pogona vitticeps). As a lighting we used spot halogen bulbs providing heating along with UV emitting fluorescent lamp with emission factor similar to that in desert/steppes areas. As for the night lighting, we placed night bulb of very low and moon-like light intensity and of power adjusted to the size of terrarium.
As part of decoration, a structural background was created on back and side walls. Background is completely resistant to bad atmospheric conditions such as high humidity, high temperature, or UV rays which destroys many popular backgrounds materials after several months. Structural background was designed in desert style, so it’s realistic imitation of sandstone with similar facture and look, though much lighter than its natural counterpart. Therefore it’s much easier to move terrarium from one place to another.
The structural background consists of many ledges placed in carefully chosen spots, under heating bulbs, in different distances to create so-called “heat islands” which differ in maximum temperature level. Thanks to such solution, lizard may choose the right spot depending on how much heat it currently requires. Further decoration includes fake plants, hide integrated into structural background, branch and a water bowl.
